Understanding EFT

EFT is a form of accupressure. An essential part of EFT history is the extensive research put into the practice over the years. Let’s talk about where EFT started and the scientific basis for EFT tapping.

History and Evolution of EFT

EFT as we know it today emerged in the 1990s. However, the root of emotional freedom techniques and the science behind the practice of EFT tapping have been around for much longer. EFT tapping uses acupressure points based on the Chinese practice of acupuncture, which was first documented in 100 BC.

These include:

  • KC (karate chop)
  • EB (eyebrow)
  • SE (side of eye)
  • UE (under eye)
  • CP (chin)
  • CB (collarbone)
  • UA (underarm)
  • TH (top of head)

Now, over 100 research studies support the efficacy of EFT.

Scientific Basis and Research Supporting EFT

EFT research shows that emotional freedom techniques are effective for various situations and mental or physical health concerns. Research generally measures the efficacy of EFT based on things like a reduction in anxiety, depression, pain, or trauma symptoms.

The Process of EFT Tapping

EFT sessions will differ based on your tapping techniques, the issue you wish to address, and other factors. Even so, you can learn some basics of EFT methodology to get an initial grasp on EFT tapping and what to expect.

Our EFT Tapping therapist specialises in the following issues or conditions.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide to EFT Tapping

Just like the issue you wish to address will vary, the specific acupressure points you tap and other details of a sequence can change. Here’s an example of a basic EFT session:

Step 1: Pinpoint the issue.

Step 2: Rate the severity of the issue (e.g., anxiety) on a scale of 1-10.

Step 3: Create your setup statement, which will consist of acknowledgment of the issue (e.g., “Even though I feel anxious…”) followed by a positive affirmation (e.g., “I am capable and worthy.”) Alternatively, you can use a mantra, such as “Nothing bad will happen to me on the plane” (for phobias, etc.).

Step 4: Repeat the setup statement or mantra as you complete your tapping sequence.

Step 5: Rate the severity of the issue once your tapping sequence is finished, and repeat step 4 as needed until you are satisfied with your rating.

Techniques and Methodologies Used in Sessions

While the above is a standard example of how EFT sessions go, there are far more ways to practice EFT. Common techniques and methodologies include:

  • Finger tapping (this uses 13 acupressure points on the hand)
  • “Tabletop” tapping (this
  • The tearless trauma technique
  • Storytelling
  • Questions
  • EFT 9 gamut procedure

Note that these are just a handful of well over 45 EFT techniques out there. Adjustments are available for young children, group therapy settings, EFT to address substance abuse, and so on.

EFT for Diverse Needs

EFT can address a diverse set of needs. Everyone who uses EFT tapping has different goals. You can use EFT for anxiety, stress relief, anger, trauma, to improve interpersonal relationships, your social life, functioning at work or school, physical health problems, and so much more.

Case Studies: EFT for Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma.

A case study is a type of research study that focuses on the unique case of one individual.

A 2022 case study determined that those who practice EFT regularly can better understand and navigate disturbing emotions. The author noted that EFT is cost-effective, simple, and easy to learn for “all emotions and body pains.” This specific study focused on fear, anxiety, and trauma healing with EFT.

Studies have found that ten sessions of EFT for PTSD or trauma can lead to better symptom management. Similarly, as few as three sessions can help relieve anxiety and depression.

EFTs Role in Managing Chronic Pain and Other Conditions

A study on six weeks of EFT for chronic pain discovered that after six weeks, participants showed a reduction in pain severity, pain interference, somatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety, alongside higher scores of happiness, life satisfaction, and quality of life.

EFT can also play a role in managing other conditions. For example, research has looked at EFT for fibromyalgia, tension headaches, psoriasis, frozen shoulder, chemotherapy side effects, traumatic brain injury, insomnia, pulmonary injuries, and seizure disorders.
